Novgorod Water and Wastewater Services Rehabilitation
Project Description
Novgorod is located 200km south of St Petersburg and is home to approximately 240 000 inhabitants. Situated on the ancient trade route between Central Asia and northern Europe, Novgorod was founded in the tenth centruty as Russia's first capital and has been declared a UNESCO heritage site.
The city's wastewater collection network was built in 1974 and in such poor state that collapses were occurring rather frequently. In 2008 Novgorod received substantial funding from Russian federal sources for the construction of a new wastewater pumping station which provided an impetus to modernise the remaining water and wastewater treatment facilities. NIB, Novgorod Vodokanal and NEFCO developed an investement project to consist of three parts:
- Construction of a new raw water pumping station
- Reconstruction and rehabilitation of water networks
- Reconstruction and rehabilitation of wastewater networks
Environmental Benefits
The investment programme will lead to a more robust and reliable wastewater collection network and decrease the risk of unintentional discharges of untreated wastewater into the the river Volkhov.
Based on earlier experiences with frequent breakdowns of the main collector conservative assumptions show that it will be out of order 5 days per year if no investments are implemented. This will result in 350 000 m3 of untreated wastewater discharging to the environment yearly, which also means that the proposed project will result in reductions of BOD, Ptot and Ntot of 105.2 and 10.5 tonnes respectively. Expected reductions in the use of energy are estimated at 1000 MWh on a yearly basis or the equivalent of reduced emissions of approximately 1000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
