Urgent Projects in Gremikha
The €7 million NDEP grant was allocated to three urgent projects in Gremikha Bay located in Kola Peninsular.
The first project was for the creation of safe storage conditions and unloading of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from Alfa-class nuclear submarines. A Russian company, FSUE NIKIET, prepared the design and carried out the procurement and construction works. The project was successfully completed in September 2008 on time and within budget.
The objective of the second project was to carry out feasibility studies for removal of SNF and radwaste from the Open Storage Area and for provisions for safe storage of WWR type SNF in existing storage facilities in Gremikha. The contract was signed with the Russian Research Centre Kurchatov Institute (RRC KI) and a number of Russian parties. The project is nearing completion.
The third project entailed the improvement of physical protection in Gremikha. The contract was awarded to a Russian company, FSUE SSPE ELERON, which completed the works in September 2007 on time and within budget.
